Venus/Pluto Thought Of The Day

We are only as beautiful as we are in our ugliest moments.

The true measure of beauty is nothing external; it is something found deep within our core and is determined by how gracefully and lovingly we handle ourselves when in the midst of messy, screwed-up scenarios where it would otherwise be all too easy to revert to a more base level of operating.  Can we override our more dysfunctional responses and connect with the love in our hearts by displaying softness and kindness in these kinds of situations?  Will we bring Beauty to bear when faced with The Beast?  This is the mark of true loveliness on a soul-level – everything else is superficial.

Pluto & Bioluminescence

BioluminescentI know a thing or two about (metaphorical) journeys into the Underworld – it’s something that comes with the territory of having a decent Pluto punch in your chart; whether this is innately wired into your makeup via your nativity or simply result of a protracted or pronounced encounter with this energy by transit or progression. Whenever we are dealing with Plutonic resonance we always seem to hear about the old “butterfly” cliché;  the euphemism designed to make us feel better about the massive life-altering metamorphoses we typically experience in conjunction with this planet. But in my own subjective experience (read: long and storied history) with this astrological energy, I must say in all honesty that I have found this to be a rather inadequate comparison. Why? Because once the chrysalis stage of the caterpillar’s life cycle ends, it is somewhat implied this new feather-light carefree creature simply spreads its resplendent wings and flies off into some golden summer sunset as if this were the end of story. That has not been consistent with my own personal experience of this planet, as in my view this would seem to trivialize the depth and magnitude of the Plutonic darkness that can swallow us before the actual rebirth occurs. Yes, there is a massive transformation, but a butterfly is far too delicate and ephemeral a creature to survive the fires of Hades.

On a personal level I can say that have been though periods of such prolonged and profound darkness that – instead of the butterfly – I legitimately wondered whether I would wind up some blind cave-dwelling species of salamander that hadn’t seen the light of day in so long it no longer even had eyes. Unsettling as this may sound at first, I actually don’t see it that way as our other senses do have a way of (over?)compensating in this sort of scenario – besides, I quite like the idea of Al Pacino as Lt. Col. Frank Slade in “Scent of a Woman” as my empowering muse in this regard!  Blind and yet nonetheless skillfully doing the tango in the middle of a crowded restaurant – now that’s something worth going for! I suppose it all boils down to whether or not we are comfortable with the idea of trading in our sight if we knew it meant we could develop near superhuman use of our other faculties. Because the Ferryman must be paid somehow, after all…

Much as I prefer this musing to the “butterfly” metaphor, it still feels somewhat lacking and doesn’t seem to tell the whole story. The dissonance for me comes via the assumption our troglobite friends remain in this blackened underground environ indefinitely, which simply isn’t the case with Pluto. We may indeed descend into The Abyss, but the law of Pluto also says we must rise again to experience resurrection; this is its promise. There are no guarantees regarding how deep down we will go, but a general guideline is the depth will at least be enough to make us squirm uncomfortably. Nor is there any kind of assurance regarding how long the resultant climb back up to the surface will take, but we can rest assured that it *will* happen.

Pluto’s most powerful function is indeed to take us way down into the cavernous recesses of our souls/psyches – it is through this planet’s influence that we learn what we are really made of on a core level when everything else is stripped away. No other astrological body gives us the kind of enriching insights that Pluto can. But its treasures are not given up lightly – first we have to illuminate the unconscious and come face the darkness within in order to claim that “gold in the shadow”. It can be a scary experience if we fear the dark, but it can also be a tremendously empowering one. For when we spend enough time in this pitch black space, eventually we figure out how to become bioluminescent and generate our OWN light; one that isn’t the least bit externally dependent. It is something that radiates entirely from within. Once we’ve borne this mark of Pluto, we carry this internal luminosity with us forever wherever we go and can use it to be a light for others. And if we are truly fortunate, every so often this glow allows us to recognize others who have made this very same journey so we can connect on a soul-level.

Pluto In Capricorn Transits, Part 4

Get caught up on this topic with the other installments in this series:
Pluto In Capricorn Transits, Part 1
Pluto In Capricorn Transits, Part 2
Pluto In Capricorn Transits, Part 3

Continuing our contemplation of Pluto in Capricorn transits, there is yet another invaluable angle to consider if this body contacts a planet or point in our personal astrological chart.  In addition to being deeply interior, Plutonic energies also represent a kind of breaking down process so that healthy renewal might take place.  When we pause to reflect upon Capricorn’s association with protection and defenses, we see how this energy can relate to the beneficial destruction of psychological  walls, barriers, etc. that we may have knowingly or unconsciously put up to keep people at a safe distance.  I will explain –

Whenever we endure some kind of trauma or negative experience in life, sometimes it’s possible to harden over and develop this self-protective “crust”.  The psyche develops this shell to function like shield or armor; to guard us from something that on some level may have seemed to threaten our very existence.  While originally intended as a sort fail-safe mechanism to limit the level of devastation we experience, sometimes the perimeter wall becomes a bit extreme, as in a “No trespassing: Intruders will be shot” kind of thing. What once triggered a “normal” survival instinct actually becomes pathological, where we become afraid of real intimacy.

I believe one function of transiting Pluto in Capricorn touching a natal planet or point may be to show us how this kind of exoskeleton is obsolete; that a transit from Pluto in Capricorn can actually illuminate any kind of PTSD-like response so that we can learn to control it and let time and experience serve as a guide in determining when and with whom it’s safe to drop our defenses a bit and expose what we would otherwise be inclined to keep hidden under lock & key.  It’s about learning to parse “normal” survival instincts that serve a legitimate function and that keep us safe from the ones that have – through no particular fault of our own – become twisted.

There is always strong resurrection potential whenever we are dealing with Pluto energy.  But first we have to be willing to burn off all the dross….

An Aquarius Archetype

Doctor Manhattan is totally an aspect of the Aquarius Archetype – you know, freakishly intelligent but simultaneously possessing a supreme level of detachment that can also be frighteningly devoid of humanity at times?

Aquarian energy draws its cues from the planet Uranus, and the darker side of this vibe can be beyond glacial – it’s more akin to a dry ice that evaporates into a gas (air; i.e. intellect) without ever becoming water (emotion).  If you’ve ever heard an Aquarius utter the words “I don’t care” and felt the blood in your veins run cold after hearing this pronouncement, then you know what I speak of. Those who are strongly attuned to this kind of  energy may have to combat this tendency at times – on a personal level, I know on a couple of very specific occasions, I’ve had to when I could literally feel my neural circuitry shorting out where my “give a damn” abruptly and completely broke. This coincided (not surprisingly) with some major Uranian activity in my chart.  It was a strange and uncomfortable dissociative sensation I don’t care to experience ever again – I recall being completely aware this was exactly what was going on and yet unable to do anything about it except observe and just let it run its course.  *shivers* I did eventually return to “normal” (whatever that is – such a relative term anyway when you’re already a weirdo astrologer, LOL); meaning I regained feeling.

But before anyone reading this freaks and thinks I’m hating on Aquarians, though, realize the comparison made above utilizes the qualifier “an aspect of”, meaning certainly not all Aquarians/Uranians/those experiencing heavy-duty Uranus energy by transit or progression.  There is power in archetypal symbolism, however, and it’s completely possible to resonate with this particular manifestation of the energy.  I merely make this (admittedly darker) association for the sake of presenting a fair and balanced take on this astrological signature so people know what to look out for – you can read about some of my more favorable/neutral takes on this energy here and here.

PS – Phil Collins is an Aquarius.

Mutable Madness: “Mobilis In Mobili”

Mutable Madness: A motto for the incoming astrology of May & June.
A motto for May & June’s Mutable Madness.

We have some Mutable Madness on the way with another round of Jupiter in Virgo squaring Saturn in Sagittarius during late May and then version 2.0 of the Saturn/Neptune Square hitting in mid June.  When considering the incoming astro, “Mobilis in mobili” popped into my mind – it’s a latin phrase that means “moving around within the moving thing” and I thought it absolutely perfect for describing the flavor of the approaching vibe!  From this we can get the sense of movement; of things being in a state of flux, and can take away a sense that flexibility and being able to juggle multiple balls in the air at once is going to be a requirement for the task(s) at hand.  People with placements between 11-15 degrees of any of the Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) should pay extra attention, as they are going to find themselves plugged into this energy quite directly.

The strength AND weakness of all this Mutable Madness lies in its adaptability – on one hand when we find ourselves dealing with delays/impediments/obstacles, it certainly behooves us to see if there is an “alternate route” available to us. On the other, though, we do have to be *very* careful not to diffuse our energies with too much vacillation under such a “scattered” vibe.  Mutable energy always creates a tendency to bob and weave, however it’s entirely possible that in doing so we may find ourselves pulled in too many different directions at once and/or generally lacking in beneficial continuity.  Know that diversification can be an asset or a liability depending on how we work it under this astrology – the key is awareness.

Although this energy peaks from late May through mid June, all the players involved are already within proximity so this influence officially builds from hereon out. We can prep for this period by minimizing any/all unnecessary distractions ahead of time and relieving ourselves of excessive/extraneous duties or burdens in order to maximize focus and productivity, because if it feels like something is too much work NOW, just wait until this Mutable Madness *really* gets into full swing…!  If we’ve bitten off more than we can chew the approaching astro will definitely let us know it, so it is important to let go of what we can lest we find ourselves overwhelmed by inconsequentials  and/or driven to distraction.

The Libra Lunar Eclipse

Today’s lunar eclipse in Libra definitely has our feelings about relationships taking center stage! Libra is the sign of partnership after all, and when I take into account Venus – the ruler of this eclipse – being rather prone to mooning over lost unions during its current tour of Pisces, I’ve been getting a wicked “White Flag” vibe off this lunation.

“But I will go down with this ship;
And I won’t put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I’m in love
And always will be.

And when we meet
Which I’m sure we will
All that was there
Will be there still
I’ll let it pass
And hold my tongue
And you will think
That I’ve moved on….”

As of this post’s publication, Venus has been conjunct Neptune for several days now, which has definitely heightened the inclination to pine for Love; possibly to even become a martyr to it.  These two planets are parting – perhaps with a bit of sweet sorrow – as we speak, but the vibe of this eclipse will be a slow one to dissipate while Venus moves toward the South Node and then Chiron over the next week or so.  What we don’t want to do, then, is take a cue from Dido and go down with the ship!

I think whenever we have truly loved someone, it can be hard to release the ideal of “Happily Ever After”. But Love is not a fairy tale, and so the dream can fade as partners go their separate ways. I believe it is important – when this happens – to honor the love that was there, yet to also recognize when a connection no longer has relevance in our lives.  It is sad, yes, but to sentimentally insist we will always be *in love* with someone discounts the possibility they served a spiritual purpose in our lives for the time they were in it and the connection was meant to be ephemeral.  If we cling to the past like this instead of blessing and releasing, how will we ever move forward and come to fall in love with Another in the future?

I propose that if we find ourselves reflecting upon a past partner at this time and wanting to reach out to them, we also need to be careful of our motivation for doing so.  It’s one thing if we feel as if we need to apologize for causing someone pain, but we should be aware this often isn’t experienced as helpful or healing to the other party involved and that what we may really looking for is absolution for ourselves.

Reflecting upon my own past loves, I can say that when I’ve been able to look at my past Self via the mirror of relationship and felt I’ve had something to apologize for,  I’ve never been shy about doing so.  But I’ve also never sought out an ex expressly for this purpose, either – fate simply intervened and brought us back into contact again, though only for the sake of expressing our mutual regrets and then releasing the attachment for good….a true case of “touch and go”.  I do think I will probably always love anyone that I’ve ever genuinely been in love with to a degree, but it is a very different feeling to me than actually still being *in love* with them.  I harbor the kind of vague, dormant affection one might for an old friend that hasn’t been seen in many years.  You acknowledge the history and love what they represented to you at one point in your life, but you also don’t linger in the past.  And with this Libra Eclipse infused with energy from the Aries Sun & Mercury plus its contact to Mars, it is all about living in The Now and being ready to embrace The New.  So if you catch yourself humming “White Flag” whilst pondering an ex, surrender the attachment as best you can.  Give it up to God/Goddess/The Universe.  And trust that if there were loose ends meant to be tied up, that you won’t have to go seeking him or her – Divinity will intervene to ensure that your paths cross again one day…

Jupiter Trine Pluto: Auspicious Omens

There’s something in the air during March & June…or perhaps more precisely, the Earth. Earth Element, that is – Jupiter in Virgo and Pluto in Capricorn form a trine during these two months, and some auspicious omens may appear to us during these times.

LaughingBuddhaAt first they may seem small…trivial, even. Small enough to miss if we were to take each one out of context and look at it on its own. But they will also be bountiful – we’re going to get so many of them that if we back up and take it all in, it will coalesce into something huge we can’t miss. Jupiter in Virgo is like pointillism – if we stand too close, we only see the tiny dots and so don’t think much of it. But if we get some distance (read:perspective), we can see how all the minor details actually come together to make this grand picture. So what is “insignificant” under this energy, really? Nothing, because when we put all the little pieces together and connect the dots, The Sign becomes concrete. It’s regarding a major renovation/upgrade somewhere in our life…perhaps something health/wealth/work-related since we do have the Earth signs involved. If you have a planet or point in your chart situated between 14-20 degrees of Taurus, Virgo, or Capricorn, do pay particular attention…

Mars Rx, Literally

MarsRxWith Mars turning retrograde (Rx) in comparatively short order, I thought now would be an ideal time to talk about some of the potential effects this phenomenon may have upon health. Why?  Do you know the astrological shorthand for a planet retrograding is the same as the medical symbol for “prescription”?   This has always gotten my gears turning!

Let me begin by saying that Aries and Scorpio should take note of this event in particular – as this is YOUR ruling planet that is backtracking, it’s likely to have especially physical manifestations you may need to be aware of.  Mars is our metaphorical “get up and go” – it represents drive, desire, motivation, physical energy, our muscles, blood, testosterone, and libido just for starters. Being that Mars is also the symbol for masculinity, it’s worth noting that men in general tend to be more affected by Mars retro from a health standpoint – sorry guys, this is just how the cookie crumbles! We ladies have our own challenges during Venus retrogrades, which happens about every 18 months vs. the 22 month reprieve you fellas get until the next Mars retro swings around again!

We do need to be aware that Mars retrogrades may tend to bring out more “men’s health”–related issues on the whole….or perhaps more accurately, things that we tend to *think* of as being more related to men’s health. Along this vein, the first thing that comes to mind – especially with a big chunk of this retro phase taking place in sex-sign Scorpio from late May until early August – are sexual or libidinal issues. We may have difficulty from a sexual standpoint getting in touch with what truly “turns us on” during the Rx, or experience some kind of quote-unquote sexual dysfunction which can mean anything from arousal issues, to blood flow problems, to testosterone deficiency…if we are attempting to procreate (which, by the way, can be made more challenging during Mars Rx) it’s extra important that we also take a look at things like sperm count and/or motility now.

Now none of this is cause to freak out, nor is it a guarantee that you will personally experience any of these sorts of challenges. But for those that happen to, it may be helpful to have some astrological insight into what might be going on, because when Mars backtracks we do have to be wary of taking things purely at face value. Therefore, in this kind of scenario it’s important to look for any potential underlying root cause(s) rather than just look purely at the physical symptom(s). For example, instead of writing something off as “just a blood flow problem” and treating with little blue pills, maybe it’s worth pursuing this in true Scorpion fashion via getting a few needle sticks for the sake of *really* getting to the bottom of things. The blood may indeed prove an invaluable investigational resource in more ways than one during this period, and this doesn’t have to be limited to the confines of of a purely sexual or reproductive context, either.

When I see Mars retrograding in Scorpio, something else this cues to mind for me is there may possibly be some kind of toxicity going on within the bloodstream below the surface – for instance, perhaps something like heavy metal poisoning could be underpinning a physical issue. I’m neither a doctor nor a medical professional, so none of written here is meant to be construed as medical advice, but if you’re looking for places to start an investigation, absolutely do your own research and consider talking to your doctor or other healthcare practitioner.

In other areas, I also tend to associate Mars with iron and ferritin levels, and this planet backtracking does to me trigger a potential “anemic” feeling. If your physical energy levels are low and you have other possible markers of anemia, this may be another area worth investigating; especially for women experiencing heavy menses. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the regular and frequent consumption of high-quality bone broth is thought of as a mainstay in addressing such issues, so definitely don’t be afraid to also attack physical ailments from the kinds of philosophical and energetic points of view provided by things such as TCM or Ayurveda, for example, as this aligns rather nicely with Mars retrograding in cultural Sagittarius and energetically-oriented Scorpio. Mars in Scorpio especially has a very “what’s old is new again” feel to me, so there may be a resurgent interest in looking at physical ailments from the energetic or symbolic perspectives of more ancient “primitive” healing methods.

Speaking of energy levels, Mars holds an association with the adrenal glands as well, so perhaps if anemia isn’t part of the picture it may be worth investigating the possibility of adrenal dysfunction.   With the outset of the retro happening in Sagittarius, my feeling is there is a possibility of initial OVERactivity that can subsequently crash and lead to UNDERactivity, so uncovering what our cortisol levels may have to say could prove revealing.

Mars also holds an association with the surgeon’s knife, and because of this Mars Retrograde is not generally considered a favorable time for scheduling ELECTIVE surgeries.  Note that I stress the word “elective” there – common sense dictates that if it’s an emergency situation and we don’t have any kind of say in the matter, this becomes a moot point so please don’t worry about it!  But if it isn’t critical that one be operated upon immediately and there is the ability to plan a procedure, generally avoiding the period from circa April 17th – June 29th may be a good idea.

Lastly, I will point out that Mars is indeed Ye Olde (lesser) Malefic from an astrological point of view – what this means in a nutshell is this planet’s penchant for rash, impulsive action tends to get us into trouble. When I think of this planet’s lustful nature in particular, this quite simply says to me “wrap it up” – especially when it spends months amped by a stay in sexy Scorpio! This is a general “no”, then, to any hot-but-risky liaisons and definitely a cue to slow it down if we should find ourselves in a rush to initiate a new level of intimacy…physical OR otherwise. Slow it down, because particularly once Mars re-enters Scorpio in late May there can be a certain compulsiveness underpinning things where we act without necessarily knowing why. In such cases, it’s critical to look at subconscious psychological motivations…especially if they incline toward self-destructive at all.

Requiem For A Lunar-Flavored Pluto-In-Capricorn Transit

You are having a Lunar-flavored Pluto-in-Capricorn transit if any one of the following applies:

  • Pluto in Capricorn comes into contact w/ your Moon
  • Pluto in Capricorn rolls over your IC/through your 4th House
  • Pluto in Capricorn opposes your Sun, Moon, or other significant planets you may have in the sign of Cancer

And, to a lesser extent:

  • If Pluto in Capricorn comes into contact w/ the planet that rules your 4th House/IC

With Pluto in Capricorn affecting a Lunar area of the chart, psychologically digging around in old, family-of-origin -related “stuff” may be in order for the sake of unearthing anything potentially dysfunctional that may still have a hold on the psyche and burying it for good.  Funny this song came on while contemplating my own Lunar-flavored Pluto-in-Capricorn transit…I found the both the song title – “Roots” – and the lyrics disconcertingly apt:

“I know it’s gotta go like this, I know…
Hell will always come before you grow…
Trouble found me, trouble found me….

I’m going back to my roots
Another day
Another door
Another high
Another low
Rock bottom, rock bottom, rock bottom….”

The Quotable Mars in Scorpio, Right On Cue

Speaking of “inner demons” and “Seven Deadly Sins”

“You sharpen the human appetite to the point where it can split atoms with its desire” – Al Pacino in “The Devil’s Advocate

If that’s not a quote for Mars in Scorpio, I’m not sure what is…! In my last post I did say that desire trumps all with this placement, did I not? In a freakish turn of events, I had set that post to automatically publish late in the evening and as it did so I happened to find “The Devil’s Advocate” on TV. Hmmm…interesting, right? I am not usually a night owl, but the timing of this was way too compelling so I sat down to watch the movie and I’m glad I did because that’s when the above line jumped out at me. That whole MOVIE is very Mars in Scorpio/Mars on Antares if you ask me…we even see the Mars in Sagittarius component alive and well by virtue of the fact the main characters are aaaaaallll lawyers and Sadge has strong ties to the judicial system. When the movie ended, I was even further taken aback by the fact that the next movie on the docket immediately following this happened to be “Seven”, as in the previous post’s mention of the “Seven Deadly Sins”..! Intrigued by the “coincidence” – which I knew straight away was no coincidence – on a hunch I decided to pull a chart for the time my post was published and I began watching the movie. Wouldn’t you know, Mars in Scorpio Rising?

Does the Astrology imitate Art or does Art imitate the Astrology? Six of one, half a dozen of the other – I think it’s pretty cool either way….
